The opposition is a state where the two kings face each other with one empty square between them. The player who does NOT have to move holds the opposition and can outflank the defender.

Keep your defending Rook on the 3rd/6th rank to block the enemy King from advancing.
Do not move your Rook off the 3rd/6th rank until the enemy pawn advances to the 6th rank.
As soon as the enemy pawn advances to the 6th rank, immediately drop your Rook to the furthest 1st/8th rank.
Winning with a Queen against a lone advanced pawn on the 7th rank requires driving the enemy King in front of its own pawn using checks and pins to gain tempi for bringing your King closer.

A fundamental endgame where the Queen slowly maneuvers to force the defending King and Rook into zugzwang or a fork, separating the Rook from its King.
