Essential Endgame Principles

  • The defending Rook attacks the enemy pawn from the flank (side), maintaining a 3-4 file distance.
  • Deliver horizontal checks whenever the enemy King moves toward the pawn.
  • If the attacking King retreats to defend the pawn, the defender shifts back to attack the pawn from behind or the side.
  • The attacking King can never find shelter from side checks without allowing the pawn to fall.

Step-by-Step Technique

Step 1: Keep the defending Rook on the 6th rank (or flank) pinning down the advancing pawn.
Step 2: When the attacking King tries to shelter next to the pawn, unleash rapid horizontal checks.
Step 3: If the King attacks the Rook, retreat along the file while maintaining the pin on the pawn.
