The fundamental drawing technique in Rook endgames. The defender keeps the Rook on the 3rd rank (or 6th rank as Black) to prevent the attacker's King from advancing, then moves to the rear for vertical checks.

Essential Endgame Principles
Keep your defending Rook on the 3rd/6th rank to block the enemy King from advancing.
Do not move your Rook off the 3rd/6th rank until the enemy pawn advances to the 6th rank.
As soon as the enemy pawn advances to the 6th rank, immediately drop your Rook to the furthest 1st/8th rank.
Deliver endless vertical checks from behind because the enemy King has no pawn shelter left.
Step-by-Step Technique
Step 1: Keep Black Rook on the 6th rank (e.g. Ra6) preventing White's King from crossing rank 5.
Step 2: When White plays e6 (advancing the pawn), play Ra1! immediately.
Step 3: Deliver relentless checks from the 1st rank (Ra1-e1+) — White cannot escape checks without repeating or losing the pawn.
